Must I Purchase a .com Domain Extension?

by editor on May.31, 2009, under News

I’ve heard both sides of this argument from various marketers over the years, but primarily the answer most will give to that question is yes, it does make a difference. That for some reason, Google gives more “love” to a .com or even a .org domain than to a .info (or even .net) domain.

The people that have told me this say that it is obvious) to see this is true because when you look at the search results you receive when you enter a search phrase into the search engines, the top sites are quite often going to be .com or .org.

Yes, this is generally true, but I have another side to that statement that you could consider when deciding which extension you are going to purchase.

There are thousands, hundreds of thousands more .com and .org websites on the world wide web than there are .info. This fact on it’s own could explain why the search results usually have .com and .org domain names in their top listings. This does not mean that it is not possible that the search engines prefer .com or .org, I am just bringing up a point. That is that .com and .org domain extensions should be on page one of the search results most of the time, there are 10’s, even 100’s of thousands more websites with a .com or .org domain extension.

I have way more .com domains. I like those because when people enter domain names into their address bar they usually to enter .com. So, by simply purchasing a .com you can ensure they arrive at your website. If the website you wanted in a .com has a .info available and you purchase it, then when the person goes to enter it into their address bar, it is likely that unless they were actually attentive, they will be entering in .com. And so instead of arriving at your website, they would land on someone else’s.

I do have some .info extensions however and as far as a search engine optimization stand point I have found them to rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com website. Therefore, for search engine optimization purposes it doesn’t really seem to matter which extension you choose. The search engine optimization side relies more on your keyword phrases and links than to the extension you buy.

So, when purchasing your domain it comes down to what you prefer. Does it matter to you whetherthey accidentally type in .com rather than .info (or even .net)? How you answer this question will help you chose which domain extension you buy.
